By the early 1960's GM was in need of Personal Luxury Car to compete with Ford’s fast selling Thunderbird. Inspired by a custom bodied Rolls Royce GM styling guru Bill Mitchel penned a car filled with both luxury and performance.
First offered to Cadillac they refused sighting that sales were strong and they didn’t need it.That might of been good news for us and Caddy because if the Riv didn't go over to Buick we might not of had another Bill Mitchell style and engineering masterpiece known as 1967 Cadillac Eldorado.
In need of a sales boost slow selling Buick took on the Personal Luxury Car. Unusual for a GM product the introduced in 1963 Buick Riviera shared no body parts with any other GM product.
The 1963 Riviera was a sensation. By model year the 1965 Riviera would get the Gran Sport option. The GS consisted of stiffer suspension and shocks. The GS engine was the 465 Super Wildcat with dual quad carburetors. The Super Wildcat had a tire smoking 425 horsepower and a stump pulling 465 pounds of torque. The Buick Riv in GS trim could sprint to 0-60 in 7.1 seconds. Beating most Muscle Cars of the day.
Also new for 1965 was the workhorse Turbo 400 automatic and problem-matic Clamshell Hidden Headlamps.1965 was last year for this body style and milestone car. Sales were strong with over 112,000 sold but only 3354 buyers chose the Gran Sport option.
